"Mrs. May Yancey Lesley, a pioneer Tampan who wrote Florida's compulsory schooling law, died yesterday at home at 719 S. Delaward Ave. She was 92. Mrs. Lesley had lived in Tampa since 1895. Once a teacher, she initiated and wrote the compusory schooling law in 1919. It was introduced in the Florida legislature as a local option law for counties. But, it was so well received that, before the end of a year, every county had voted its provisions into effect. Mrs. Lesley assisted a national suffragette leader in establishing local branches of the League of Women Voters in the 1920s...She graduated from the old Hillsborough High School and the Normal Institute for Teachers. She taught school in Tampa and Anclote, near Tarpon Springs....." from obituary
