Hi Steven,

You should be able to find a death certificate, SSN application, obituary, funeral card or cemetery record for your grandparents. If it in turn tells you who their parents were, you are off to a good start.

Something you folks with double consonants in your surname have to remember is spelling; check for "Wadel", "Wadell" and "Waddel" as well as "Waddell". Folks like me have to check for entirely different spellings, like "Park" and "Peck". If your last name ends in "ell", you should try for "le" as well. Not all of your ancestors spelled consistently, and even if they did, the clerk they spoke to may have muffed it. Just for example, here are the Waddells living in Wythe County in 1880, according to the LDS census transcription:

1. F. M. WADDLE - 1880 United States Census / Virginia
Self Gender: Male Birth: <1841> VA
2. Martha WADDLE - 1880 United States Census / Virginia
Wife Gender: Female Birth: <1837> VA
3. James WADDLE - 1880 United States Census / Virginia
Son Gender: Male Birth: <1864> VA
4. Floyd M. WADDLE - 1880 United States Census / Virginia
Son Gender: Male Birth: <1869> VA
5. Organ V. WADDLE - 1880 United States Census / Virginia
Dau Gender: Female Birth: <1871> VA
6. Mary A. WADDLE - 1880 United States Census / Virginia
Dau Gender: Female Birth: <1875> VA
7. Jane WADDLE - 1880 United States Census / Virginia
Wife Gender: Female Birth: <1827> VA
8. C. A. H. J. WADDLE - 1880 United States Census / Virginia
Dau Gender: Female Birth: <1865> VA
9. E. G. WADDLE - 1880 United States Census / Virginia
Dau Gender: Female Birth: <1867> VA
10. James N. WADDLE - 1880 United States Census / Virginia
Son Gender: Male Birth: <1871> VA

One of those "WADDLE" sons may be your grandfather's father.

"King" is easier; very few people misspell it. There are 110 people named "King" in Wythe county in 1880, though, so what it gains in clarity it loses in commonness.

I have some links and tips for beginners at
