I am researching my father's family and in desperate need of help. My great grandfather, George W. Bretthauer married Emely (Emily, Emmly) Louisa Waughtal (on different census, it is spelled differently). They married in 1862 in Muscoda, WI. Emely was born on 10 March 1837 in Wisconsin. According to all census statements, her parents were born in Illinois. However, according to a statement at the time of her death (1916), her father was a Henry Waughtal, born in Germany. I have traced my Emely from the time she married through her death on census. During their life together, Emely Louisa Waughtal Bretthauer and George Bretthauer raised 9 children and lived in Wisconsin, South Dakota, North Dakota, Saskachawan and Washington State. I have been unable to find her name on any census prior to her marriage. I have even searched all the Emelys, Emilys, Emelias and Emelines in Wisconsin and Illinois. It is possible that she married a Waughtal and he died prior to her marriage to my great grandfather...or perhaps her father was a Waughtal who did not marry Emily's mother. I don't believe she came from outer space...and I would VERY much appreciate any help that anyone can give me in trying to locate her family (and my family, too). Thank you very much!
