Ravi,I am a combat veteran of the Ist Infantry Division in Vietnam (1966).
As to your questions about De Niro's character in the Deer Hunter. I felt it was way over the top, as are most war veteran characters in film, usually to make a heavy handed point about the horrors of war.

Oliver Stone's "Platoon" was authentic looking. Everyone looked like a Vietnam era soldier, they all acted as such. But his script was pure horse dung, riddled with so many inaccuracies, I lost count. I was in Vietnam a year before the film takes place, and I didn't believe hardly any of it.
Another laughable film was the Mel Gibson "When we were Soldiers". I had friends that fought in the battle depicted. The whole thing was a joke as far as I was concerned. Gibson's character was laughable, IMO. (as was the script)

The only truly decent film about Vietnam was a film entitled "Go tell the Spartans". Starring Burt Lancaster and Marc Singer. It is set in 1964, the year before the "buildup" started.
Most films about Vietnam had a political agenda behind them, there has yet to be one produced that really tells the truth.
There is a film being produced by Tom Hanks and directed by Paul Greengrass called "They Marched into Sunlight" based on a book by Paul Marranis. It should be released around Dec of this year. It involves my regiment in Vietnam, but a year after I left (plus I was in the 1st Bn, this is the 2nd Bn) If the film sticks close to the book, it should be a very truthful tale.

All the other so called "Vietnam war films I've seen, aren't worth a mention.

I imagine you will get other opinions re: Vietnam films. Pleas keeep in mind that what I said is just my opinion, others may disagree.
I hope you recieve many opinions and are able to draw a conclusion as to the veracity of the Vietnam era war films.

Best of luck,

Gary "Ray" O'Keefe formerly of:
Co. A, 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, Ist Infantry Division. Phouc Vinh, South Vietnam. January- July, 1966
