Hello cousin, We are bothe Vair descendants, my gr-gr-grandfather William Vair being an elder brother of your gr-grandmother Mary Ann Vair. I have just returned from a trip to Scotland, and was able to visit Traquair House in the Borders. There was an exhibition of personal letters written by the ancestors of the present Stuart family owners, one letter being written by Lady Louisa Stuart, daughter of the 7th Earl of Traquair. The letter was written around 1804 to her father, who was away from home at the time. I wonder if our ancestor Louisa Stewart (Stuart, Steward) Ireland, born near the estate of Traquair House, was named as a compliment to the local gentry? My research has shown that many of the Vair descendants were given names relating to friends or in-laws, so this could also be possible. Unfortunately the tourist booklet containing copies of the letters was currently out of print and on order, so I didn't get one, but I hope to find one in the future through the Traquair House website. It was a lovely old place, still being lived in by the current family. Regards - Katherine Vair Paterson Notify Administrator about this message?
