Hi Edwin, I found two possible John Vail's on LDS family search. First, John H Veal 18 in 1880, dob 1862 living with another family in Tanners Creek, Norfolk, Virginia. Second John Henry Vail b. 1856 dob 1856, dod Nov. 1964, living in Damascus, Washinton, Virginia. Do you think either of these gentlemen was your great grandfather? Veal is the usual spelling in the southern states while Vail is most common in the northern. A Veal spelling might indicate being in the Jeremiah Vail line, while Vail at later dates is indicative of a Thomas Vail line. This is not a hard and fast rule, but a likelyhood. I didn't do as well in finding Martha Evans. I found one Martha living in 1880 with what appears to be a widowed brother-in-law Thomas Arnold in Washington, DC. Her date of birth abt. 1861.
Does any of this ring a bell? The second name for Martha is "MaCall" not McCall? There were several African American Martha Evans in Virginia, and at least one Mulatto. I know there are African American Vails. Is this a possibility? I'll continue searching for you if you can give me a little more info. I didn't find a marriage for Martha and John on the family search site.
