I have an Ednie family going back to a marriage in 1699 at Fife (Tayport/Ferry Port on Craig opp. Dundee). Before that they seem to disappear. I wonder if there is a connection to the Udneys a bit further north in Aberdeen.

The name appears to get anglicised to Edney on contact with English clerks further south. However, the English Edneys appear to be a distinct bunch mainly situated at Hampshire, with no significant concentration between them and the Ednies who mainly come from Fife.

I wonder how the Aberdeen mob pronounced Udny?
