While searching for info on the ALLIGER family in the 1855 NY State census for the Town of Rochester, Ulster co., I came across two young black women, surnamed TACK, living in two different homes as servants. My guess, is that they are somewhat related to each other and probably were descended from black slaves owned by a Dutch family of the area with that surname. Here are the listings in the 1855 State census: line 16940 house #236 YEAPLE, John 38, ship carp.,wf. Cornelia 23, Eliz 7, Isabel D. 6, William H. 2, infant male 1/12. line 16942 house #236 TACK, Lucy A. 13, servant BLACK ALLIGER, Martha A, 20, brdr. line 16847 house #214 ALLIGER, Cornelius D. 30, frm res30yr. wf. Maria 35, res8yr. John B. 8 Charles H., 1. also: KELLY, Wm. 15, servant b. Ireland res 8/12yrs TACK, Hannah, 21, servant, BLACK. This info extracted from the book 1855 Ulster County NY Census vol I. by Ulster County Genealogical Society no date given. This volume was in the Newburgh (NY) Free Library.
