Descendants of Rockwell Joseph Wood

Generation No. 1

1. ROCKWELL JOSEPH1 WOOD was born December 22, 1828 in Bethel, Windsor County, Vermont, and died February 22, 1922 in Near Sebastopol, California. He married EMELINE WEST July 03, 1846 in Victor, Ontario County, New York, daughter of JONATHON WEST and MARIA SHELDON. She was born 1827 in Victor, Ontario County, New York, and died November 27, 1886 in Millville, Shasta County, California.

Notes for ROCKWELL JOSEPH WOOD:
Rockwell J. was a farmer in New York state and shortly after his Marriage went to Michigan, where he remained for a short time, and then he returned to his new York home . In 1853 he made the long trip across the plains to California, driving ten thousand head of sheep, and camped where the city of Oakland now stands. He returned east by way of the Isthmus of Panama and in 1857 again came across the continent with a drove of sheep. In 1859 with his wife and six children , their oxen, emigrant wagons, provisions , thirty-- three men and ten thousand head of sheep he started on his third trip to California. They wintered at Salt Lake City and reached their destination the following year. He built one of the first houses in Oakland, at which time the only ferry across the bay was an old whale boat,
In those exiting and some what lawless early days he passed through some thrilling experiences and witnessed many things which today sound stranger than fiction.
On arriving here with his last flock of sheep he located in Contra Costa County, where he leased the Doctor Crothers ranch near Martinez. here he operated a large diary and cheese factory until 1865 and then he devoted his attention to farming. He was enterprising and progressive in his methods and brought the first threshing machine into that county. For a time he farmed the Government ranch and then in 1871, moved to Red Bluff. later he went to Lassen County where he had a large dairy but in 1873 returned to Red Bluff and rented two thousand acres of the Joe Cohen grant, which he operated for four years. He next settled at Millville, Shasta County, where his wife died November 27, 1886. After that Mr. Wood went to Mexico, where he remained until 1904 when he came back to California , locating at Sisson for a time and then went to Waterville, Washington, where he homesteaded one hundred sixty acres of land. A stroke of paralysis put an end to his activities, However, and he came to Cotati and resided with his daughter, Mrs. J. F. Welch, until 1915 , subsequently making his home with his son Oscar until his death, which occurred February 22, 1922, in the Ninety Fourth year of his age. He was in many respects one of the most remarkable men who ever contributed of their efforts to the developments of this part of the country. He was an inveterate reader, especially fond of history, and possessed a very retentive memory . He was also a lover of good music. He was a typical pioneer and to such the West is indebted for its early development and laying of that splendid foundation on which has been reared the civilization of the twentieth century.

This information is from Uel Marr, January 10, 2002
George was born in Geneseo,
Henry County, Illnois, February 6, 1838. His father James Davis Taber was born in
New York and with a couple of others, platted and founded Geneseo before coming to
Missouri and then to California.
George was a homesteader at
the age of 15 and by the time of his death was quite well to do in the
Antelope District of Red Bluff. Tehama County, California. Zora is buried by George in the Oak Park
Cemetery, in Red Bluff.

Finally, Eric, here is a little stuff on GBT. You and Phoebe have: knocked
me out" with your information and computer skills. I have never dealt with a
GEDCOM but will soon learn how to do so. Transmitting at this point means
retyping so you may find this brief even as I find it onerous. I know that
she has sent you her information, so this will include some little references
that she may or may not have sent. If you do not have, then, what you want
or need, please ask as I am not sending everything now. By 1842. (age
14)George had homesteaded on Deer Creek, abutting the Toomes Grant, in Butte
County, California. In 1853, he bought a frame home, stable and other buildings and
appurtenances from Peter Carstens for $1000 in gold coin and then in 1859 he
purchased 40 acres from William R. Mayhew for $700.In 1859 he was a trustee
on the board of the first school in the Lassen District, which by then was in
Tehama County, California. On June 14, 1860, his wife, Lydia Jane, subscribed before a
Notary in Berrien County, Michigan, signing off of a deed for property(apparently
the homestead and buildings) in Tehama County and then on October 22, of that
year, in LaPorte County. Indiana, she again signed, acknowledging the deed. In 1870,
George and family were farming near Martinez, Contra Costa County, and then in
1874, "Zora", his wife died on March 4 at the Bee ranch near Red Bluff.
(This is apparently the ranch that he bought from the Ballard Bros. in the
Antelope district across the Sacramento River from Red Bluff.) This purchase
also included a public ferry on the river, where there was no bridge for the
next few months. On Sept. 1, 1875 he married Amelia, and the 1880 Census of
Antelope Twsp., Tehama Co., lists him with wife Amelia and seven children.
HIs obituary in the Red Bluff paper says that "he resided on his Antelope
farm with wife and children until recently when he went to the home of T.B.
Hickman, his wifes brother, in hopes of recovering his health, where he
died."
Maybe this will fill in a little of what Phoebe has sent. Let me know. Uel
PS Yes, Martinez is just over the hill from Oakland.

Florence and Frank were in Cotati, California in January, 1913.

Notes for JAMES F. WELCH:
The information here is from Pat McClendon and Kathy Lewis;
From an old newspapper article in The Chronicle, Sacramento, California;
Sacramento, August 19, --- Mr. and Mrs. James F. Welch of 806 Haight avenue, Alameda, were instantly killed today when the automobile in which they were riding was struck by westbound train No. 1, limited, on a crossing between Batavia and Dixon. The bodies were brought to Dixon by one of the trainmen.
Mr. and Mrs. Welch, who were both past 68 years of age, were on an automobile camping trip and were going towards Dixon when they were killed. The road near where the accident occurred runs parallel with the track to near the crossing, which is made on a slight rise. It is belived Welch, on account of the rise in the crossing did not see the train and when he heard it there was no time to avoid the crash.
The man and woman were hurled a considerable distance. Both were dead when the men from the train ran back to the crossing. It is belived they were instantly killed. The bodies were badly bruised and several bones of each were fractured. The bodies were taken to under taking rooms at Dixon, where an inquest was held by Acting Coroner Brown, who is trying to locate a son of the couple, who lives in Alameda or Oakland..

He married (1) MARY IDA PURDY November 13, 1883 in Orville, Butte County, California, daughter of JOHN PURDY. She was born in New Brunswick, and died December 21, 1904 in Sisson, California. He married (2) EFFIE PERSONS May 01, 1907, daughter of THOMAS PERSONS and DIADAMA BROWN. She was born August 08, 1866 in Sandusky, Ohio, and died February 05, 1940 in Sebastopol, Sonoma County, California.

Notes for OSCAR HIRAM WOOD:
Oscar was a succssful Poultryman of Sonoma County, entitled to specific Recognition as a splendid type of the progressive and loyal citizens who are making the state of California one of the greatest in the union. He realized substantial success in the business world as the result of his own well ordered efforts, for he was in a significant sense the architect of his own fortunes.
Oscar was given the advantages of a good public school education and remained on his father's farm until he reached his majority, when he went into the lumber woods and was employed as day labor for a while, after which he became a contractor. In 1895 he and a partner bought out a lumber concern at Siskiyou , California, in which they prospered. The firm owned two sawmills and had a lumber and mercantile business. Their business grew to large proportions and they built a railway from the mainline to their mills, operating this road for about twenty-five years. In 1911 Oscar sold his interest in the lumber business and came to Sonoma County, buying thirteen acres of land near Penngrove, on which he engaged in the poultry business. Later he sold the property and in 1920 bought five acres near Cuningham, which he greatly improved and theron sucessfully engaged in the poultry business until his death, running about four thousand hens and maintaining his ranch at a high state of excellance.
