John Daniel MacLeod was in Company A, 1st Marine Battalion in June 1898. 650 Marines assaulted the beach at Guantanamo Bay to drive the Spanish out of the area. He was a Canadian from Pictou County, Nova Scotia. I searched through the Marine Muster Roll at NARA one name at a time till I found him. His brother George was in the 8th Massachusetts. The following is the transcription of the Marine Discharge for John Daniel MacLeod as best I can make it out. UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS. To all whom it may concern Know ye, That John D. McLeod , a Private of the U.S. Marine Corps, who was enlisted the 13th day of June, 1893 at Boston Mass. to serve 5 years, is herby discharged Having served his full Enlistment Said John D. McLeod was born in Nova Soctia is now about 27 years of age, 5 feet 71/2 inches high; Dk. blue eyes; [?] hair;Dark complexion, and by occupation when enlisted a Baker REGISTERED: [signed] Y E OC Reed? Major, U.S. Marine Corps, Given under my hand, at Washington, D.C. this Adjutent and Inspector. 10th day of September 1898 [signed] Charles Meywood ?
