My soldier in uniform

I have a picture of a man in uniform. I have a gg-grandfather in the Cival War and a great uncle in the Spanish American war. I know the picture belongs to one of them. I looked at civil war uniforms and there many different kinds. I saw a few with the stand up collar with a white band under the collar. But the Spanish-American was the only one with crossed sabors and US on the collar. He has a single row of buttons. On the other side of his collar is US and he has two small loops of braiding attached to some sort of patch on the side of his chest. Where these attach at the base of his collar are two more braids that gently loop across his chest and across his buttons and down out of site. His head, chest and shoulders are all that's visible in the small oval picture. If any one has any idea what any of this means please let me know.
Yours truly,
Brenda Moss
