I just had to say this is a great story and hold onto it. Usually these things told to us generation after generation have truth in them. The story shows how difficult life could be for children and how easy it is to become disconnected not even hearing ones last name spoken. Culture and custom may have eliminated the need for last names particularly in Native American Culture. I wonder if this history was repeated in generations after and someone in tribal membership may be descended from mother and younger children having heard this story repeated.
