I hope this information is helpful to someone. I'll be happy to supply a list of sources.

Descendants of John Skaggs

Generation No. 1

       1. John2 Skaggs (Thomas1) was born Abt. 1762 in North Carolina or Virginia, and died December 08, 1839 in Monroe County, Virginia. He married Catherine Hicks February 14, 1786 in Greenbrier County, Virginia, daughter of Joseph Hicks and Melvina/Lavinia Cole. She was born 1765 in Virginia or Maryland, and died Aft. 1850 in Monroe County, Virginia.

Notes for John Skaggs:
John and Katherine Skaggs were listed as charter members of Greenbrier Baptist Church in Alderson, Greenbrier County, Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1781, but there is a question about that year. Some say the church was founded in 1787. This confusion needs to be clarified. Thomas Skaggs was not listed as a charter member, but he became a member of the church. His name appears in the church records, including at least one reference to his advanced age. (Thomas appears to be enumerated with John Skaggs in Monroe County in 1800.) Susannah Skaggs and her husband William Withrow became members of Greenbrier Baptist Church on 10/30/1802.
John and Catherine are buried at Old Greenbrier Baptist Church Cemetery in Alderson, West Virginia, as is John's father, Thomas. Thomas is buried in an unmarked grave. The stone on John and Katherine's grave is a new one. Compiler has visited this cemetery, where John and Catherine's children John and Jane are also buried.
Some believe John's mother was named Lucretia, which is quite possible, since John had a daughter named Lucretia. Susannah Skaggs Withrow and Richard Skaggs, both believed to be siblings of John, also had daughters named Lucretia.

Property 2: 1817, 148 ac. Big Laurel Cr., Greenbrier County, Virginia

Notes for Catherine Hicks:
Even though Catherine's tombstone (put up recently) has a death date of 1842, that CANNOT be correct, as she is listed in the 1850 Monroe County, Virginia, census in the home of her son John Skaggs, Jr. Catherine's brother Richard Hicks married Jane Skaggs, who was probably the sister of John Skaggs.
An affidavit filed in 1834 in Monroe County, Virginia, names Susan, Elizabeth, and Catherine as surviving sisters of Mordecai Hicks, who fought in the Revolution. Other Hicks siblings are also mentioned on this site: http://members.aol.com/hickspage2/mordecai.html.
Compiler has not seen proof of Catherine's parents.
