The Rains website devoted to the Rains surname/DNA project and Rains lineages has lots of information on Rains generally and Joel specifically. The address is http://www.sonic.net/melvaw/.
Although all other surname projects are easy to view and join, the Rains surname project requires that you go through the administrator Melva Wheelwright for a password and user name. (I understand the hoops are rooted in a lawsuit. Perhaps someone has a better explanation.) Melva's e-mail address is melvaw@sonic.net, and you can start the process there. She is very knowledgeable and helpful. My understanding is that the lineages are contributed and subject to error. The site shows that Joel was married to Elizabeth Yarbrough and their son Gilbert L. (Dib) born Feb. 14, 1838, was married to Frances W. (Hattie) Barfield. Joel's son William was born about 1848 in Madison TN, with no death date or marriages listed.
Civil War deaths are generally well accounted. There is mention of a Civil War grave for William Rains in the 34 Tenn. Bat. at this site http://hownowwit.blogspot.com/2006/11/reflective-stones.html.
