I have heard that Rabone is derived from Rathbone. I checked with Dorcas Hendershott of The Rathbone Register who provided the following information about the International Genealogical Index: "The IGI and some other sources do have records of RABONEs who were really RATHBONEs, which only adds to the confusion. The RABONE family seems to be quite separate from and the main family which crops up in Wolverley, Worcestershire in the 18th century and from which the large families in Birmingham and the West Midlands are descended, did not change their names to RATHBONE, as happened with many RADB**** and RAWBONE familes in the central counties of England." Here's another resource about English variations of Rathbone, including Rabone: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~haslam/surnames/qr.html#rath In summary, it seems to be a mystery exactly where or when people started calling themselves RABONE, but the common line of speculation is to look to the RATHBONE and RAWBONE family names for the origin.
