While trying to run down a branch of the family that moved out to Colorado, I ran across some civil war service by two members. Unfortunately on the Yankee side. But history is history. Since one of their grand daughters married into the confederate Clark side of the family, I'll bet there were some interesting discussions. Theodore Rabedew Sr.Born circa 1830 I believe in Canada. He moved to Ny York State and the 1850 census has him listed like this. 1850/NY/Essex/Chesterfield/p.261 Head of house:Theodore Rabbideau age 21 occupation nailer Place of birth CAN Wife: Julia Rabbideau 18 CAN Son: Theodore Rabbideau 2 NY next door There were a couple other Rabideaus James Rabideau 20 CAN Charlotte Rabideau 19 CAN Then in 1860 they were out in Dunham IL. 1860/IL/McHenry/Dunham/Harvard PO/p. Theodore Robidew 30 day laborer France Julia Robidew 29 France Lovina 12 NY Theodore Rebedew 10 NY Susan Rebedew 8 NY Salina Rebedew 6 NY William Rebedew 4 IL Charles Rebedew 2 IL (as you can see the name spelling seemed to be at the whim of the census taker. (Plus I have no idea who Lovina is??) Maybe she was the daughter of a brother who stayed with them or something like that.) His 1st Enlistment Date:08 August 1862 Distinguished Service: DISTINGUISHED SERVICE Side Served:Union Enlisted as a Private on 08 August 1862 Enlisted in Company C, 95th Infantry Regiment Illinois on 04 September 1862. Received a disability discharge Company C, 95th Infantry Regiment Illinois on 10 March 1863 ***Note this unit saw lots of combat action. The list of battles goes on for over a page. 2nd, enlistment Company "C" 142nd Illinois Infantry This unit was mustered for 100 days and was made up of veterans of the 95th. They were assigned railway station and supply security duties. Probably because most of them were on the sick and wounded list from previous battles. His 2nd discharge: REBEDEW, Theodore Private Dunham Jun 18, 1864 Mustered out Oct 26, 1864 His son ,, THEODORE JUNIOR also joined up after his father came home on sick leave. Probably to make money for the family. Theodore Rabedew Jr: Born May 1848 in NY, Theodore Rabedew in 1885 Eagle County Colorado Census. Then age 37. With Wife Elva Cross-Rabedew (born Oct 1851) age 34, son Joshua age 14, daughter Julia Ann then age 12, and daughter Eva age 2. Also 1887 land tract recording in Eagle County Colorado. According to his brother’s obituary, he was still living in Minturn Colorado at the age of 92. Said to have enlisted at age 16 in last year of civil war. His wife and kids were all born in IL. His kids went to school with his younger brothers. Occupation listed as MINER Della Cruzan refers to this Theodore Rabedew as her Uncle Theo. Or Uncle Thea. She said that she like spending time with him and that she also played with one of his daughters that everyone called “Olive” born May 1895 to Theodore Jr and Elva. She said that he had a dairy and a Horse Stable. Apparently he was also involved in local mining as well.
