I had a one year subscription ot the Genealogy .com census reports and when I was desperately trying to find my "Rabenold/Rabinold/Rabinolt relatives, I typed in: "Amos Robinold" from a lead and got: Northampton, Twp Lehigh, PA 1850 Roll M432-792 36 of 41 Image 734 42 Jacob German 54 (b1796) Farmer 6,000 PA (next page) 1 Catherine German 58 (b1792) Laborer PA 2 Jones 22 (b1828) PA 3 Amos 20 (b1830) PA 4 Levi 18 (b1832) PA 5 Caroline 18 (b1832) PA 6 Sally 13 (b1837) PA 7 Mary 8 (b1842) PA I also saw "German" used as a last name in other documents in the PA area. I wonder if the German people could not speak English as the time and when asked what their name was, they said German, because maybe they thought they were being asked about their language or ethnic group. I just saw this in a cemetery listing somewhere in TN or GA yesterday. Families named "Garman" in a German area. I cannot recall the area. Perhaps in Green or McMinn Co, TN or Whitfield or Catoosa Co., GA. I don't know if anyone else has come across this. If you have a German relation you cannot find, try and find "German", Garman" and maybe that may help. If you compare dates and locations, they may match up to German-type surnames eventually and be the names you may be looking for. I hope this helps. I am still trying to find my only Rabenold I have so far: Amanua (Amanda?) E. (Elizabeth?) Rabenold b. Oct 6, 1850 bur: Jan. 1934 St. Marks Cemetery, S. Allentown,PA.
