Hi Rick,

I descend from William Newsome and Anne Sheppard, through their son Thomas Newsome.

After the death of her first husband William Newsome (will proved Surry 5 Sept 1691), Anne Sheppard married (2) Thomas Hart and (3) George Foster. The will of Anne [Sheppard] [Newsome] [Hart] Foster was proved 20 March 1710/11 (Surry Deeds & Wills (1709-1715), p. 48). In it she names "my youngest sons Robert and Thomas Newsome" and "my daughters Elizabeth and Anne Newsome".

If Elizabeth Newsome had been married to John Pace, she would have been "Elizabeth Pace" in 1711, not "Elizabeth Newsome". The will shows that she and her sister Anne were both unmarried in 1711.

As I understand it, the theory that John Pace's wife Elizabeth might have been a Newsome is based on the fact that one of their sons was named Newsom or Nusum. It may be so, but she was not Elizabeth Newsome of Surry. There were Newsoms in the adjoining county of Lancaster. There may have been a connection there -- or, since John Pace of Middlesex was almost certainly born in England, his wife might also have been born in England. The Pace DNA study has shown very convincingly that John Pace of Middlesex probably originated in Prees, Shropshire. Perhaps his wife did too. Or she may not have been named Newsome at all.

The Spencers of Surry County were not related to Princess Diana's family.

James
