James Tandy PACE

Does anyone know where the middle name "TANDY" came from in James Tandy PACE's ancestry?

James T. PACE (called "Tandy") was b. in 1847 in Barren Co., KY and died in 1929 in Red River Co., TX. He was the son of Joseph Washington PACE and his first wife, Harriet WHITLOW.

I have the PACE and WHITLOW (and related) lines back to their origins in VA in this country and have also collected a lot of information on the TANDY families of VA....but nothing gives a clue to James' middle name.
