My father's maternal grandparents were Patrick O'Donnell and Ann Sharkey. Ann was, apparently, born in 1839 or 1840 in Dungloe. Patrick was born in 1822 (or 1829), also in Dungloe. I don't have original sources for these dates - they are from a web posting by a Peter O'Donnell in Australia who I've been unable to contact, or inferred from immigration list data. Ann and Patrick traveled to Australia on the vessell Northbrook, ex Plymouth 15 May 1879, arriving Sydney 15 August 1879. Family legend has it that they had a large number of children (21 is the number I recall), and this seems to be at least partly borne out by the NSW immigration list which has 11 junior O'Donnell's on the ship. I've identified another 4 born in Australia. A rough summary of children: Nancy 1859-? Edward 1860-1891 John 1861-1890 Pat 1864-1893 Neill 1865-1892 Mary 1866-? Ann 1867-? James 1869-1894 Cassey 1870-? Peter 1870-? Hannah 1876-? Margaret (Maggie) 1880-1880 William 1880-1880 Sarah 1881-1964 (my grandmother) Joseph 1883-? Sarah, my grandmother, married Edward Thomas Russell from Sydney and lived in Perth. I believe one of her sisters married a Mr McGann and also lived in Perth. They had, to my knowleged, two sons, Gerard and Emmett, and a daughter, Vera, who became a Carmelite nun and lived in Queensland. My memory is vague (having heard this story when a small child) but there was something about some of their children being born in, or remaining in, the USA. I also recall being told as a child that 7 of their children became nuns or priests. I'd be interested in any information about ancestors or descendents of Patrick and Ann, or any information about their own lives and travels. I don't know, for example, Patrick's occupation, or where they ended their lives. Ed Russell Canberra, Australia Notify Administrator about this message?
