Maryville Times, (Blount Co. TN) Saturday, October 10, 1903:
"Dan McIntyre Murdered---A cowardly murder occurred in the mountain fastness of Tuckaleechee Cove, in our county last Sunday night when Dan McIntyre lost his life at the hands of Van Jennings. The above named in company with Andy Jennings and several others were engaged in a game of cards at a logging camp situated far up the mountain on Laurel Creek in the cove. They had a quarrel, but the men made up again after Jennings had secured McIntyre’s pistol. But after a shore time they got into another dispute, and McIntyre got up to leave but Jennings followed him, and when a short way from the camp shot him in the back, killing him almost instantly. An inquest was held over the body of McIntyre on Monday morning by Esq. William Tipton of Tuckaleechee, the verdict of the jury being that he came to his death by a pistol shot fired by Van Jennings and recommending that a warrant be issued for the Jennings brothers. After the killing the Jennings fled to parts unknown, but Sheriff Edmondson and his deputies have been after them and hope to capture them in a short time. Blount County averages about one murder a year, and it is high time the killing of fellow citizens was stopped and the laws enforced. From all accounts of the above it looks like it was a premeditated murder and the criminals should be dealt with severely.
Later---The Jennings were captured Wednesday by Sheriff Edmondson and are in jail at this place. The officers deserve great credit in capturing the men so soon."
