Scottish families often used the naming pattern ....

1st Son named after Fathers Father
2nd Son named after Mothers Father
3rd Son named after Father

1st Daughter named after Mothers Mother
2nd Daughter named after Fathers Mother
3rd Daughter named after Mother

It's not always so rigid- a child may be named after an uncle who has died or the same name may be used more than once if a previous child has died, but in general it's a very useful indication of what names you're looking for in a Scottish family. In the 18th and 19th centuries there would be great disapproval from your relations if you deviated from this pattern, and all my ancestors certainly stuck to the pattern.
