An early note in Harrison County records indicates the death in 1809 of a Benjamin Brown, said to have been a friend of Hiram Westfall. Subsequent probate inventories and records state that Benjamin's widow, Margaret, remarried to John McIntire (7-1-1812). A note in the file shows an 1818 receipt for education for children Polly Mahala and Benjamin, although the reconstructed 1810 census reflects two girls and one boy with Margaret Brown. Between 1818 and the 1850 census, only one Benjmin Brown and one Mahala Brown are listed in the marriage rolls of Harrison County Indiana: Brown, Benjamin married Abell, Ellen in Harrison County Indiana 2-07-1836 Brown, Mahala married Evan, Richard in Harrison County Indiana 5-27-1830 In the 1850 Federal Census of Harrison Co IN, on page 369, we find: Brown, Benjamin 49 M [b. about 1801] Farmer IN Page 369, Family #1245 Elender 35 F IN Nancy 13 F IN Preston 11 M IN Catherine 09 F IN James 04 M IN Margaret 03 F IN Rebecca 6/12 F IN John 05 M IN [Since the parents and all children are listed as having been born in Indiana, this must surely be the Benjamin Brown who married Ellen Abell in Harrison County Indiana on 07 Feb 1836, the year before their eldest daughter was born. This is very likely the Benj Brown who is enumerated on Page 245a of the Harrison County Census of 1840] --------------------------------------------------------------- Evens, Richard 51 M Farmer KY Page 369 Family #1249 Mahala 43 F[b.abt 1807] IN Benjamin 19 F Farmer IN Charlotte 16 F IN James 14 M IN John 11 M IN Sarah C. 09 F IN William W. 02 F IN [This seems to be Polly Mahala Brown, daughter of the Benjamin Brown who died in 1809. She was raised by her Stepfather and mother – John and Margaret (?) Brown McIntire. A Mahala Brown married a Richard Evan in 1830.] We suspect that this Benjamin Brown and Mahala Evens are brother and sister, offspring of the Benjamin Brown who died in 1809. Can anyone either confirm or deny this assertion? We are always happy to share acquired information with other researchers. Jim Patrick Researching 4 distinct lines: 1.
