Too many Archibalds, Alexanders, & Johns!

Hi all,

I'm setting here getting a headache. I descend from Jerrell McEntire, born c1820. Old Jerrell married three times: UNKNOWN; Elizabeth SNOW; Lackey MELTON. Of course, my ancestor is the unknown woman. Their daughter, Malinda (b1843) is mine. Anyway, I'm confused as to who Jerrell's father was. Some say Archibald. Others say John Alexander.
I think his father was John. Also, who was the Archibald who was involved in a land swindle in NC? Papers relating to this are at Duke University. Can someone shed some light?
