I'm going to quote from the book, "Smith-Garrett and Allied Families of Overton, Fentress and Pickett Counties, Tennessee," by Oma Smith, pub. 1979. Page 447: "Chapter XVI Boles Families James Bowls was one of four Boles men to come early to the Overton County area and the only one to remain and rear a family. A John and Benjamin Bowls, and a Robert Bowles are seen in the county records briefly in the years from 1813 to 1820. Only James appears in the Overton County census for 1820. The spelling of the name differs and sometimes can be found with different spellings in the same public record. Except in references to an official record, we have used the name Boles, the spelling used by present day descendants of the name Overton, Fentress and Pickett Counties Tennessee. 10 December 1813---A Robert Boles was one of the Securities for Allen McDonald's three land surveys on Obeds River that were recorded on this date. (East Tennessee Surveys, Overton County, Tennessee, 1807-1813, 'Ansearchin' News,' Tenn. Genealogical Society Quarterly, Jan.-March, 1965, 23.) 14 March 1815---Benjamin Bowles bought 217 acres in Overton County from James Armstrong for $1,000. (Overton Co. Deeds, D, 72.) On 15 May 1818 Benjamin Bowles of Cumberland County, Kentucky sold to Coalby Creed for $1,600 a tract of 168 acres in Overton County. (Ibid., F, 128.) John Boles was involved in the circuit courts of Overton and on 16 September 1816, a suit, William Burrus vs. John Bowls was filed regarding property rentals and profits due. The suit was continued and 12 March 1817 John Bowls was to obtain Moses Kirkpatrick of Cumberland County, Kentucky as a witness. This suit dragged on through the years until 1822 and did not appear to be settled in 1824, at the end of the only volume of court minutes extant. (Overton Co. Court Minutes, 56, 132, 252, 333, 363, 405, 433.) John probably lived just over the state line in adjoining Cumberland County, Kentucky. He [page 448] and Benjamin owned property there and Benjamin lived there at least some of the time. The only other reference found for John indicates he had moved to Cooper County, Missouri. On 10 April 1836 John Boles of Cooper County, Missouri by his attorney sold 80 and a half acres in Overton County on Kettle Creek to Thomas Mayberry. (Overton Deeds G, 306.)" Benjamin Bowles is my ggggrandfather. He married Elizabeth Jeffries in Barren Co., KY in 1810. They had nine children and by about 1825 were found in Chariton Co., MO. In 1827 they moved to Texas. I have quite a bit of documentation on their lives after they reached Texas. If anyone can tell me more about any of the people mentioned in this posting, I'd very much appreciate it.
