I've not heard this story before, but it might explain the two dots I've so often seen beneath the /c/. I've always understood that MacArthurs are Scots and McArthurs are Irish. Is this true? We Douglases are Scots, for sure, and those Douglasses are English. At least, that's what my husband told me. I, myself, am a Masson of French persuasion; those others, the Masons, are Scots or English. My son is the lucky one: Not only is he Scottish and French, but his maternal grandfather was William Patrick Mulligan.
