WARREN -- Eva MacArthur Barbour, 104, a resident of Middle Road died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at her residence after a brief illness.

She was the widow of Benjamin C. "the Egg Man" Barbour, who died in 2000.

Mrs. Barbour was born Aug. 30, 1900, in River Hebert, Nova Scotia, a daughter of George Ensley and Emma E. Sherwood MacArthur, and was a 1922 graduate of Nova Scotia Technical College with a degree in stenography and shorthand.

In the mid-1920s she moved to the states, and was employed by the textile mills in Biddeford, where she met her future husband. They were married Sept. 7, 1929, in Biddeford.

They resided in Massachusetts when he was transferred to plants in Brockton, Mass., and Worcester, Mass., then in 1939 they bought a farm in Warren.

Beginning with one milker, because Ben believed you did not go into debt, they built the family farm with a dairy herd and laying hens. Today, "BenEva" farm is owned and operated by granddaughter Sharon Chadwick, her husband, Jerry, and daughters Aubyn and Shelby, who bought it in 1989 after 50 years of operation by the Barbours.

During World War II, Mrs. Barbour served as a plane spotter for civil defense and was a member of the former White Oak Grange in Warren.

She enjoyed music, singing and playing the piano, playing many times for the dances at the grange, coin collecting, maintaining a journal of birds she observed, growing flowers and vegetables, and was an avid writer of letters to friends and family.

The family extends special thanks to "Nana's" caregivers who lovingly cared for her at her home.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Ronald Barbour, who died in 2002, and two sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include a daughter Evangeline "Sis" Gibson and her husband, John, of Norridgewock; a son, Morgan Barbour and his wife, Sarah, of Bellevue, Wash.; a daughter-in-law, Ethelyn Barbour of Waldoboro; 11 grandchildren, Sharon Chadwick and husband, Jerry, of Warren, Jack Gibson and wife, Gail, of Norridgewock, Jeff Gibson of San Francisco, Paige Green and husband, Tom, of Skowhegan, Marcy Barbour of Bellevue, Wash., Darcy Paige of Texas, Scott Barbour and his wife, Ashley, of Jefferson, Kim Brown and husband, Buddy, of Nobleboro, Glenn Barbour and his wife, Donna, of Waldoboro, Melissa Barbour of Nobleboro and Ronald Barbour and his wife, Laurie, of Waldoboro; 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; and special friend, Hazel Gammon of Waldoboro.
