Thank you, Robert. You obviously have an encyclopaedic knowledge of this family name. I had just thought that 1862 was rather late to be using alternate spellings. There is some suggestion that all the handwriting in the register entry is in the same hand. This would make it more likely that the witness's name be spelt differently to usual.
