I think James knew the spelling of his famliy name. It was not unusual for children using differnt spelling. I found many exambles of this in my research. Children of the first Mebane in Penn. had differnt spelling ( some used Meben and another Mayben). Their descendant in NC used Mebane. Some of there children ,who went west as far as Texas, droped the "e"on the end.
