George Jellard Mabin was the son of George Mabin, a tidewaiter (a Customs Officer who waited for ships coming in on the tide)of Torquay, Devon, England, by his first wife Ann Jellard. George was born in 1791, the son of Samuel Mabin and Mary Spencer, and married Ann at St Michael's, Blackawton, Devon,17 July 1814, and died in Torquay 6 September 1865.Ann died in Torquay in 1833.
Samuel was born in 1746 in Halwell, Devon, the son of Austin and Elizabeth Giles. Austin was the son of John Mabin and Miriam Earle.
There are a large number of Mabins in New Zealand - all descendants of two of the children from George's second marriage to Mary Row Crockwell. The history of this family has been well documented.
