American descendants of Jean Latourrette and Marie Mercereau do not know why and how Jean Latourrette left Osse, Bearn (now Osse-en-Aspe in the department of Pyrenees-Atlantique),in 1685. Much that has been written about him before 1693 is incorrect or misleading, including identifying incorrectly the Basque village of Osses (not Osse), near Bayonne, as the village from which he left. My webpage noted below explains why and how Jean left Osse as a single male. There will be another, longer paper posted soon to correct all the misunderstandings in America about Jean's origins. The French versions of the papers now on the webpage were presented at Osse (Osse-en-Aspe) on August 7, 2005 to the Protestant community on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Temple Bethel, reconstructed in 1805. (The original temple, except the arch stone dated 1620, was destroyed in 1686 after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes.)

NOTE RE Searches for Latourrette Castles and Nobility: Latourettes found in other areas of France, especially without the double "r", are likely of no relationship. There were no castles in Osse and Jean was a unmarried younger son of a prominent Protestant family with a land title, but not of nobility. The laws and customs of Bearn from the 12th century precluded serfdom and nobility.
