I was aware of Irish Kivetts and always wondered about the origins of the surname. My theory (unsupported) was that the name is of Belgian (Flemish) roots and that the surname sprang from those mercenaries that accompanied William in 1066. Their name might have started out as DeKiveit. In Dutch, I am told that this spelling (Kiviet) is for a shore bird whose eggs were very prized. It also would appear that many of the Fitz---? surnames are actually attempts by the Normans to make their surnames sound Irish. If there was a yDNA test taken on sample Irish Kivetts I am willing to wager a match with those who now reside in the US. This would prove beyond any doubt that there are common genetic roots are the same. That they also could be in the south of Holland or Flanders where William was able to recruit paid soldiers.
