Hey does any know someone who knows numbers in Cherokee , Creek or Catawba. The word coups is an award for doing something considered brave. Perhaps the names was Ja-coups or Ja-coup. Someone told me that Cherokee vowels are a lot like Spanish so the actual pronunciation could be more like our Haw/co/oops. If some one could find out the numbers it might be interesting. My take on it is the name is Jacoups as it was tatooed on my mothers arm by an uncle or cousin while he was doing another cousins arm. He told her that this way she would never forget what her last name was. This was done when she was about four (so around 1919) it also makes me think that at one time the families were more connected with each other. Betty
