Guy: Guy: I think your John C. Jacobus of Trenton Twp., Delaware Co., Ohio may be the son of Cornelius H. Jacobus (1758-1835) and Abigail Gould (d. 1836) of Caldwell, Essex Co., NJ. At least four other children of Cornelius and Abigail – Joseph, Mercy (Wheaton), Moses and Maria (Condit) – moved from New Jersey to Ohio ca. 1832-1838 and settled in Delaware County. While the evidence is only circumstantial at this point, it appears that John C. Jacobus was the eldest, b. ca. 1785, married at Caldwell on 19 Nov. 1809, Sarah Gould. He was a veteran of the War of 1812, having served a three-month stint in the militia, and received at least 80 acres of bounty land as a result. This is the John C. and Sarah Jacobus living in Trenton Twp., Delaware Co., in 1850 (dwelling 868, family 869) next door to 33-year-old George Jacobus and his family. Sarah died in 1868 and is buried in Trenton Cemetery; John was still alive in 1871, when he filed a claim for a pension. I can provide a few more details if this appears to be the man you’re after.
