Matilda b. 1824 Mitcham Surrey is my g-g-grandmother. Her birth/baptism information lists her as the daughter of Thomas, stone mason, and Mary. I find her in the 1841 census listed with a Mary Ibotson, needlewoman. No sign of Thomas. The death record for Mary in 1868 (at the Almshouse in Mitcham) shows a M. Smith (Matilda married a James Robert SMITH)as the informant and lists Mary as the widow of "Thomas, stone mason." Mary was 87, thus b. abt. 1781. So while I had wondered if Mary were Matilda's grandmother or aunt from the 1841 census, I lean toward her being an so-called older mother and would have been 43 at Matilda's birth.

Not many stone mason Ibotson family names, but I have some from census records, including
John (b. abt. 1821) and William (b. abt. 1816) in Mottram in Longdon Dale, Cheshire; both from the 1841 census.
I also found a Joseph H. (b. abt. 1859) in Yeadon, Yorks in 1881; also in 1881 was a Manasseh (?), age 26, in Brighouse, Yorks and William (b. abt 1858) in Yeadon, Yorks, as well as a Mark (age 19), listed in Yorks w/William Ibbitson.

Henry intrigues me, born about 1801 in Middlesex. His wife is "Elizh" who was born about 1801 in Middlesex.

I also have found an 1845 will probate from a James Ibbotson, wife Sarah. In the will, he lists his wife, Sarah, and nephews Henry and Thomas, as well as a Mary of Mitcham, widow of his brother Thomas. He further lists a newphew John WOOD of Middlesex, and a H. Wood presided at the 1869 marriage of Matilda's daughter at Trinity Church, Gray's Inn Road, Middlesex. James also refers to a sister, married name Ann WEBSTER, in Steffields (Sheffield?) Yorkshire. A census record that probably is James and Sarah from 1841 places his birth a few years before that of the Mary on my death record.

One last piece of this jigsaw puzzle: I found a Pallot's birth record from 1804 for a "Hy." (Henry?) Ibotson from Middlesex, parents listed as Thomas and Mary Ibotson, with a note that the name was also spelled Ibbotson.

Any connections/ideas/comments greatly appreciated. I will gladly share the information I have.
