I have checked all of the various spellings of the surname and I cannot come up with any matches. You need to check out the 1900 & 1910 census for Iowa and perhaps you can find your g-grandfather Walter. From here you can either go forward to 1920 and/or go back to the 1880 census etc. From 1880 to 1920 they have Soundex and this is much easier than trying to go to each county in the state. The Soundex Codes that you need to ask for are I-252 and I 520. These two will give you all spellings of the surname.
If your grandparents were born in Iowa, did they stay there are did they go else where.
