Roberta, I am sorry I have been so long getting back to you. I just spoke with my Uncle Everett and he told me that it was Hugh Jasper Iams' Father-in-Law who was kidnapped. His name was John Wesley Porter. He was kidnapped from Iowa when he was 7 years old by a man and his wife on a wagon, and they took him to Oregon, where he ran away from them when he was 15 and went back to Iowa to find his parents, but they had gone west to California to look for him. That would make him my mothers great-grandfather. Her grandma Iams dad. I am sorry about that, I always thought it was an Iams who had been kidnapped. But I did also find out that Hugh Jasper Iams was from Iowa. His family is said to have moved here to Oklahoma after a fire destroyed their home in Iowa. He married Hattie Ellen Porter. Her birthday was July 23rd, 1877. Maybe they met and married in Iowa. I'm not sure, but my uncle did tell me who to ask, (a cousin of theirs) so I will contact her and ask some more questions. I appreciate all the help you are giving me, and I do apologize if I sent you on a wild goose chase. My Uncle did say he would like to know about the next time they have a big Iams family reunion. Also, I wanted to tell you a story my Dad told me. He said that back in the 70's in Colorado (we lived there for awhile) he saw a man that looked just like my Grandpa Iams standing in a checkout line at a grocery store and so he told him, "you look just like my wife's father", and the man said, "what was his name?" and when he told him it was Iams he said that was his name also! He was the one who told my Dad that Iams used to be Ijams, but the bottom of the "j" got cut off on some important property deed, so they just left it that way. Also, Mom did always say we were Irish, Welsh, and Scottish, but she didn't know the details. So someone on down the line must've known it was a Welsh name. I am curious, as to why the extra "I" is there. Well, it's way past my bedtime and I have to get up at 4 every morning to go to work, so I had better turn in or I will be sorry! Again I am sorry I had my facts mixed up. I should have asked my Aunt or Uncles in the first place, but then I wouldn't have had any reason to get to write to you, so I guess it all worked out. I am going to send for that Iams family book too, thank you for the address. I will let you know what I find out from Mom's cousin, just as soon as I speak with her. (I will try not to take too long.) Again, thanks. Angie Keenum-Lawson.
