Thanks for the background info on your connection to the Gadbois branch of the family. My records show that Elizabeth Vandandaique-Gadbois, a sister of Alexander and Francis, first married Jean-Baptiste Lajambe in 1845, and later, Toussaint Durocher on 26-Jun-1857 at St-Columban church, Cornwall, Ont. The note in the 1845 registry entry indicates that Elizabeth lived on the Indian Lands then. If you haven't found this resource yet, you may also want to check out the web site at http://imago.library.mcgill.ca/home.htm, McGill University's Digital Imaging project. The web site has many large graphics which make downloading pretty long if you are on a modem, but its worth the time invested. Go to the Digital Collections Program URL listed on the home page. From there go to Digital Initiatives 2000 and click on "In Search of Your Canadian Past: the Canadian County Atlas Digital Project". You will find a large collection of digital images of circa 1871 plat maps of many Ontario counties and townships, including Charlottenburg. When you look up the area you referred to, you will note many Durochies and Gadbois owning land in the SW corner of the township's Indian Lands. If the Alex Gadbois who married Mary Durocher in 1860 was born about 1835 in Ontario, then he is the Alex mentioned on the maps. The Gadbois, Hamel(Amell, Ammell), Lavigne, Leroux (Larue) and Durocher families appear to have been pioneer French families in the area dating from somewhere around the late 1790s, and for several generations several siblings from one family would marry several siblings from one or the other of the families depending on who was available, so to speak. Hope that this is useful info for you.
