Where Marie Paré came from and where she married Francois V.D.-Gadbois seems to be a mystery.

The parish register for St-Régis indicates that François was born in the parish cir. 1798 (where, exactly, is not noted).

The register also records Marie Gadbois's birth as 11-FEB-1825 (I have her middle name as Margaret ???)and that her parents, François Gadbois and Marie Paré, were living at "Nutfield", also known as the "Indian Lands" in Glengarry County. Louis Hamel was born in the parish on 21-MAR-1817.

The Indian Lands is a strip of land running along the western edge of Glengarry County between Purcell and Boundary Roads which was initially set aside to give the St-Régis indians access to their hunting grounds north of the county. At some point it began to be settled so that by the 1870s the land appears to have come to be largely in non-aboriginal hands. (The term "Indian Lands" was used in a land-for-sale notice to help describe a parcel of land beings sold in Glengarry Co. last year.)

Still, if you travel East on Glengarry Conc. I between Boundary Rd. and McRae Rd., just north of the golf course, you will note that the a good number of mailboxes along the roadside still read "Gadbois".

Whether or not the Gadbois intermarried with the Mohawks of St-Régis, I don't know, but it's clear that they lived amongst them for a number of generations.

P.S. Marie E. Gadbois and Louis Hamel are my GG grandparents.
