You're running into something all of us faced early in our searches. You've got well-meaning, but not well-versed, family "historians" giving you bad guesses in the form of knowledge.
Both LaLonde and Breault (the original spelling) are VERY common and VERY old French-Canadian names. There was very little French emigration to Canada in the 19th century because the whole country belonged to the British Empire and they weren't on good terms with the French or Spanish. The last thing they wanted was more French coming in to rabble rouse in Canada and risk a revolution.
The resources you need to tap are:
1. Start with all the parish records you can get your hands on. They'll give you all sorts of detail about the child and the parents. These were the only reliable resources in much of the 1800s.
2. The Loiselle Marriage Index, a card index system created by a priest and a bunch of nuns in the 1800s, that is available at major genealogy research centers and via film from the LDS. It gets skimpy mid-1800s, but once you get back to the main body of records, it will take you back 200 years without a problem.
3. PRDH. Once you get back to people born on or before 1799, more than 90% of all French Canadians living in Quebec and select areas north and west are going to be found in there. It's available online through the Universite of Montreal website.
The best advice any of us can give you is to forget everything anyone's ever told you about these people. Start from scratch as though you were an orphan looking for people you'd never met and knew nothing about. Following family mythology will otherwise make you nothing but frustrated.
