Gretchen: Have you tried the genealogysite of the Universite de Montreal? http://www.genealogie.umontreal.ca/ Besides info on the first French arrivals in New France and subsequent descendants to, I believe 1800, they also have lists of the most commonly used names for males and females amopng the French-Canadian families of that period. From my own genealogy research, I've noticed that in the 19th century names given to children grew increasingly intricate and unusual, and I have no idea whether these names always were derived from the names of Saints as was often the case for French-Canadian names. Also, you mentioned that you were deciphering transcripts of old parish record fromthe St. Cloud, Minnesota area. Have you come across those for Rocky Run, a French-Canadian settlement that existed between roughly 1845 to 1875 somewhere near St-Paul, MN? I remember being forwarded some of these when I was researching my Lemire/Lemyre & Elemond/Emond/Hellemont families who had settled in the area. I had had some success with the Lemire family, but very little with the Elemond. Have youcome across any of those family names? Notify Administrator about this message?
