From the US censuses, when did he emigrated/naturalize?

http://www.geopatronyme.com/cgi-bin/carte/nomcarte.cgi?nom=Martini&submit=Valider&client=cdip - Martini sounds Italian originally, and indeed you can see that in France it's concentrated near the French/Italian border.

It is almost impossible to do research in France without a placename, I'm afraid (unless the name is really rare and only comes from one place!). There are no overall indexes, and most of the information is only available (other than by going to France or paying somebody to look it up for you!) either by writing to the local archives/town hall or through microfilms through the LDS, although http://www.patro.com/ has some things online (again, though, you'd have to know where he came from, it's only a surname index and the service isn't cheap), and there's the Minitel which I've never used myself (try searching this forum) - again, you'd have to know the area.

So first you will need to research in the US - death certificate if you haven't gotten it yet, emigration/naturalization records, obituary, other newspaper records.

Luckily! He is arriving in Jun 19, 1914 into Ellis Island, from Le Havre, on the ship France.

Jacques Martini, French, heading to Bessen?er, AL (first was written Birmingham, AL, then this written over), previously in US between 1880-1914, wife in US Cleo Martini, born Vermont (unusual to see that!), South RED N1B ut (??) 272 Birmingham, AL. He was 49, a bartender, and he was b. Rolhans (?) (looks like, take a look at Ellis Island yourself), France. Could be Rol(l?)ans.

It was also noted 'SI' (admitted) by his name - Special Inquiry - although I can't convince Ellis Island to cough up the right pages right now (you'll find details on the SIs etc at the end of the other manifest pages, usually). It seems to be having some sort of hiccup (using both EI and the www.stevemorse.org interface).

If you can figure out where his birthplace was, you can go about acquiring a copy or extract of his "d'acte de'naissance" (birth certificate, basically) which will give you lots of info (parents, probably his parents' ages, father's occupation, witnesses with usually relationship of the witnesses to the child or to the parents, and the witnesses age and occupation, sometimes residences if they live within a smaller village in the commune in question)
