I am interested in the Mandeville family of early New Orleans history. They had a huge house in N. O. that was by the Elysian Fields area, where the future King of France partied there. They were a promenient family there and had vast financial and real estate holdings in and around New Orleans. The City of Mandeville was founded was founded after one of them and the the old suburbs, such as the Vieux Carre' were started by them.
Bernard De Mandeville was of that family and a resident around 1700, and had one legitimate son.
Could he have had a mistress? I find a young woman named Louison Mandeville in the New Orleans records, who was the mother to Juana Sofia Estevez by N. Esteves, and Juana was described a french "metisse".
Also in the N. O. church records, a Louison Mandeville is a mislabeled child, put in the wrong racial baptismal record named as Louison Mandeville, and later a "Mr ? Mandeville" (Bernard?)appealed the record and had the Head Priest in New Orleans, correct the baptm. roster, over riding the attending priest and placing Louison on the White, instead of a Black or various Creole, then Louison's race is corrected. But by great effort it would appear.
Did Bernard De Mandeville father Louison Mandeville, by a native American Mistress, from Mobile or New Orleans?
Later one of her daughters, Juana Sofia Estevez or Jeanne Sophia Esteves marries in the promenient Latil family, which causes a great social stink there, perhaps one of the reasons for which the Houmas House was sold by the Latils...? Was Jeanne and Louisin associated with the Houmas indians? The Latils were in the same Colonial French peerage as the De Mandeville family and objected to Jeanne Sofia marrying their son.
If anyone has any answers or options, please post them. There is very little posted of the old Mandeville family on genealogy.com and there should be more. I have been told there is information about them in the old New Orleans church records, I do not have access to them, can anyone look that part up about Louison Mandeville. Thanks.
