First - I want to thank you for all the wonderful links to French names. Although I have had a limited exposure through my Luxembourg ancestors, I really have had few reasons to study the French settlers and their names before my current project.

The Diocese of St. Cloud, Minnesota is extracting sacramental records prior to transferral to an electronic data base. I was asked to extract information from the French language records for the parish of Belle Prairie in Morrison County, Minnesota, which was a primary settlement of French-Canadians. I am finding it all very fascinating because I know people with some of these surnames. My new knowledge will help me also in my capacity as editor of the St. Cloud Area Genealogists' newsletter. I plan to write a bit about this experience and also to list some of the links you have shared with me. So, your help is indeed a gift to the entire local genealogy community.

On the first page of the records I came upon a particularly difficult Christian name. It is "Elzear" Doucet, or it could be "Ebziar" or "Ebzear with a diacritical mark over the e". The name is written twice as it is from a marriage record which lists the father of the groom as well as in the narative at the bottom which states that he is present at the wedding. The first reference shows the last letter of the name to be clearly an "r", while in the second reference, the script is very clearly written except for the last letter which could be an "r" or an open "s" {plus the question of the "i" vs "e" with a diacritical mark). Also this second reference to the name shows the second letter to clearly be a "b".
Perhaps I need to take an educated guess and go with my first impression.

Again, thanks for you help!
