Origin of Fabian Surname?

Hello Fabian's!

As part of a DNA project on the Bukovina Szekely (Hungarians), we recently tested a young Hungarian cousin with the Fabian surname. His ancestors are known to have been in Transylvania since the year 1597.

Much to my surprise, unlike the other surnames tested so far, the Fabian y-DNA came up as haplogroup R1b. Closest matches so far were in England, Scotland, Iceland(!), etc.

So, I'm really interested to see if any of you other Fabians (most of you from Western Europe)and he might have a common ancestor. If you are interested in joining the project, please contact off-list, and I can tell you more.

Since it is a y-DNA project, you must be a male bearing the Fabian surname, as the y-DNA is only handed down from father to son.

Best Regards,

Beth Long
