hi everybody,
I'm writing from Rome(Italy)and my surname is D'Orazio. I wont to explain the meaning of this surname because I've read that someone of you was trying to give an interpretation but in the wrong way.
The italian word "ora" in english means ="hour" or "now" (and not gold that is "oro" with the o at the end) and the word "zio" means ="uncle" .. this is the letteral explanation but we have not to make this division because Orazio is first of all a name of person. For a better comprehension: if you say "Orazio" to an italian he immediatly thinks to Horace (a classical name)and not to the union of hour/now with uncle. The IMPORTTANT thing to consider is the " d' " before the name Orazio..it's the abbreviation of " di" that means = "of ". This kind of preposition before a surname stands for " son of" ..is like "Mac" for scottish or irish people. So D'Orazio is the result of = "son of Horace" or even "who belongs to the Horace's family". When I say Horace I'm referring to the latin poet Quinto Orazio Flacco who moved to Rome when he was very young. The fact that most of the D'Orazio come from Abruzzo(my granfather Giovanni D'Orazio too) is due to the possessions that Horace had in this region, just remember 'Villa di Orazio' where he lived with his friends and his few relatives.
