Hi Barbara,

I'm not a Dabney descendant, but grew up on part of the original Robert Dabney farm at Arlee, WV where he is buried. I have Robert's obit from the Point Pleasant newspaper. The write-up is brief, but mentions Robert as Captain as well:

Death of Capt. Dabney

Capt. Robert Dabney, died at his home in Wyoma, Wednesday, April 27, 1901, and was buried Thursday. He was about 80 years of age, and was the father of John R., Dr. David, Thomas, Clark and Capt. Dabney. He was a man universally beloved and respected.

Some questions for you:

Was the title Capt. applied from a military standpoint, or possibly a riverboat captain?

Was Dr. David a physician?

Who was the other Capt. Dabney mentioned as his son?

Also, you mention that Robert's parents were William Dabney and Martha. Do you know Martha's maiden name?

I assume they came to Mason County from Virginia to the East?

Thanks for your help,
Keith
