Dear Lawrence,

Thank you for your information. So there was definately 2 Charles Steel's and not one?

Right, I need to clarify some details;

''The first was Veterinary Surgeon Charles Steel of the 12th Regiment of Lancers . . . who is probably not your ancestor.''
Well, I wonder, is there any indication of this one's age?

I also suspect the other Charles in question was in the 17th Lancers after the crimea.

"..served in the Crimea from 29th July 1855" which would entitle him to a Medal with a Sebastopol Clasp.''

This matches a Charles Steel noted as being the son of Scudamore Winde Steel.... which is part of an obituary for him in the times newspaper. In addition I need to clarify what position any of the Charles Steel's could of held....

The Charles Steel I'm looking for is referred to as being a Lt Col, being in the Army Veterinary Core and being of the 12th and 16th lancers. I need to know if this can match with the man who served from July 1855. If it doesn't match I've spent an awfully long time looking at the wrong ancestors and this will do my head in!!! Please help me if you can...

Bye for now

Jessica
