If he was discharged from the army to pension his service records should be at the National Archive, Kew. In document piece WO97/1282
WO97 = Royal Hospital Chelsea: Soldiers Service Documents; 1282 = Cavalry of the Line: Davi - Dys 1855-1872

See my posting re Henry Cheshire for more information about obtaining records, but in your case there is a risk he may not have received a pension in which case you will need to consult the regiments muster books etc to obtain his details of his service, which would tend more towards using a research company. Having said that if he's the same Henry Dugdale army pensioner, age 61, b Marsdon, Lancashire listed in the 1881 Census in Byker, Northumberland, with his Newcastle born wife and family you should be ok.
