tracing New Zealand colquhouns

Hi - I'm a Smeaton but my great great grandfather was a Colquhoun and came to Otago, New Zealand with his wife, Catherine of Luss in the 1800's. They struggled on a difficult patch of land, had four children, then she left him and went to the North Island of new Zealand with a guy by the name of Smeaton. They never married, but he informally adopted the Colquhoun children. Colquhoun's children subsequently became Smeatons, though not through legal channels. All of the Smeaton males and some female children, to this day, have been given colquhoun as a second name, including my daughter, (a family tradition). Does anyone have any information about any of this?
